Lack of Digital Literacy in India

Digital literacy is something that every individual should have whether in India or in any other Country. In today’s era where everything is digital we must spread Digital literacy. Digital literacy is the ability of individuals and communities to understand and use digital technologies for meaningful actions within life situations. To develop a framework to understand the challenges faced in bridging the digital divide, the term has broadened to include all aspects of digital inequality including technical means (hardware, software, and connectivity), autonomy (location of access, freedom of use), use patterns (purposes of internet uses), skills (ability to use the internet effectively), and social support networks (access to advice from more experienced users).Inadequate technical means are the first and a major block in overcoming the digital divide in India. This is seen by India’s low internet penetration with only 22% of the owners using mobiles to access social media in comparison to the world average of 75%out of which only 21.3% of student’s have access to computers. The numbers become even more problematic when comparing urban to rural penetration of the internet.

As per a report from the Digital Empowerment Foundation in 2018, India’s literacy rate is only 90%. While India is experiencing a digital revolution that may allow us to move ahead in terms of economic growth and development, we also run the risk of creating a new class of digitally-poor citizens.

Some institutes like National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT),

Ajmer are conducting a Digital literacy program under National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) as part of Prime Minister’s vision of “Digital India”. Under the Scheme one in every eligible household in selected Blocks in each State/ UT of the country will be imparted computer skills.
